PROFESSIONAL WORKSHOP ON:
Working with Emotional Blocks

The workshop will focus on teaching counselors how to intervene helpfully
when clients encounter difficulties working with their emotional experience: particularly when they cover or displace primary adaptive emotion with secondary reactive emotion; block awareness of bodily-felt distressing emotion; or interrupt the full experience of unacceptable or frightening emotions after they emerge into awareness. Videotaped demonstrations will be presented, and there will be opportunities to develop and practice the skills involved in using two chair dialogue and imaginal empty chair work to facilitate the process of accessing and expressing emotion.

Workshop Speaker
Dr Wanda Malcolmis a clinical psychologist who graduated from Lakehead & York Universities, did M.A. at University of Toronto and obtained PhD in clinical psychology from York. She did her clinical studies with the founder of Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Dr Leslie Greenberg, and continues to work with him as an EFT Trainer. She is also a coinvestigator in Dr Greenberg’s ongoing program of psychotherapy research which investigates the process forgiveness and reconciliation in response to interpersonal hurtfulness in close relationships.
They have co-authored chapters in two of the seminal edited books on the psychology of forgiveness, and Dr Malcolm is the senior editor of “Women’s Reflections on the Complexities of Forgiveness” (2007) a collection of essays authored by women involved in key research and clinical work that focuses on forgiveness and reconciliation. Dr Malcolm regularly speaks at conferences and is sought out for media interviews.
Workshop Objectives
Participants will learn how to:
- recognise and work differentially with primary adaptive and
secondary reactive emotion
- work effectively with clients who get stuck in unproductive
secondary emotion
- intervene effectively when clients are blocking awareness
or interrupting the expression of primary adaptive emotion
- facilitate clients efforts to improve awareness of their inner
emotional experience and learn how to express their feelings
in ways that improve psychological well-being and interpersonal
relatedness

People in the mental health professions – psychiatrists, psychologists, counsellors, and psychology academicians, preferably those who have undergone EFT training.

WORKSHOP ON
Forgiveness &
Reconciliation

The workshop will focus on gaining a biblically based understanding of what healthy forgiveness and reconciliation are, how to embody forgiveness and work toward reconciliation after we’ve been hurt by someone we thought we could trust, and how to help others in their efforts to forgive and reconcile.
Workshop Speaker
Dr Wanda Malcolm, PhD is a clinical psychologist and Adjunct Professor of Pastoral Psychology at Wycliffe College, a theological college in University of Toronto. She teaches courses in self and pastoral care, as well as a course called “Forgiveness and Reconciliation in the Church and in the World.” This course seeks to facilitate students’ efforts to embody the Christian virtue of forgiveness in their own relationships and spheres of influence, and to assist them in their efforts to think “Christianly” about scholarly and secular understandings of forgiveness and reconciliation. anyone who is involved in faith-based people-helping ministries.
